Why SHOULD I take a Deep Breath?

Why is my Massage Therapist always asking me to "take a deep breath"?
  • When you breathe in all the muslces in your back "rev up" and become slightly more toned. When you exhale they all "rev down" and become more relaxed, so breathing more deeply helps unlock tension in your muscles
  • Holding our breath, or shallow breathing is a common strategy to avoid uncomfortalbe feelings. An old yogic expression "to breathe is to feel" captures this nicely. When you are on the massage table you have an opportunity to feel some of the stress you have accumulated, and to let it go!
  • Breathing is an automatic function of the body that we can become conscious of and can change or interact with it. It is therefore a link to the unconscious and a way to deepen our awareness and connection to our psyche.

Cloudy sky as a metaphor for depression

"Everyone's psycho-emotional state has ebbs and flows, hence the word 'mood'. Moods vary, and for some of us, the swings can be quite large. Light exposure, weather and change of seasons are among the many factors that can trigger dips or peaks in mood.

Most of us feel the affects of short winter days, but about 4 percent of the population experience serious depression and social withdrawal in the months between October and March. For persons with seasonal affective disorder or SAD, these months can be extremely difficult..."

Client Question

How Often Should I Have a Massage?

Most people come for a massage once a month, or whenever they feel stress and tension building.

For new massage clients it is often important to have a massage once a week for 3 or 4 or up to 7 or 8 weeks. This is because, for most people, their body has forgotten how to relax. During the massage they gradually begin to relax. This effect often lasts for a day or two, and then gradually evaporates. If they have another massage in within a week (or two at the most) then their body remembers how to relax in this new way and they tend to relax more deeply than the previous week.

In this way, a person can gradually learn to become more stress free and elastic in how they deal with stressful events.

If a client doesn't do this preliminary weekly treatment series, then they often start at "square one" at their next massage as their body has forgotten what it learned during the last massage.

Of course, the more you know about your body and stress reactions, the more permeable you are to the massage.
