Worried About Your Headache?
Man with a headache

Headaches are usually caused by relatively benign problems, such as muscle tension and poor posture.

However, if you have a new type of headache that is very unusual in terms of the type of pain your are feeling or it's intensity, you might want to see your doctor!

Record Breaking Snowfall = Back Breaking Snowfall?

Bend Your Hips and Knees When You are Shovelling!

We have had more snow in many places in North America than we have had in decades! In Ottawa, we are close to breaking an all-time record.

Snow Shovelling the Roof!

Many of us haven't had to shovel much the last few years, so it may be important to review how to do it!

When we keep our knees almost straight and don't bend our hips, the low back takes most of the load!

Bending with the Back!

The picture below shows better shovelling form.

The lumbar lordosis is kept (the low back doesn't curve forward) and the hips and knees bend. My center of gravity is lowered and it is going to take more energy to lift... but it is stronger.

Otherwise, all the load is carried in the low back and I will be vulnerable to muscle strain in the low back or even spinal disc overloading!

Stretch for Stress Release!

If you ever watch your dog and cat after they get up from a long period of sitting you will know this...
  • Muscles love a good stretch after being in one position for a long time!
  • Do you stretch after sitting at a desk for long periods?
  • Do you notice youir neck getting a little more tense and tight for a few hours before that wicked headache comes on?
  • What would happen if you stretched those tense neck muscles before your headache arrived?
  • Many massage clients have found that stretching when a muscle begins to feel tense closes the door to an episode of headche or back pain!

Massage at the Mount Everest Base Camp

Jon Alcombrack has always been adventurous, so no one was surprised when Jon announced in 2007 that he was going to Mount Everest to treat climbers and sherpas, but we all sure were inspired!

Jon treating on Mount Everest

Jon trained hard and Massage Therapy Practice.com followed him to the gym to record his training regimen. It was intense!

Then, when Jon returned we interviewed him in a park as he told us some of what he learnt on the trip. In particular, that massage therapy helped high altitude athletes cope with Khumba cough.

Client Question

What Should I Do if I'm Sore After a Massage?

Many people are a surprised to find themselves sore after a massage! Soreness can arise from a variety of reasons, and a little soreness is often inevitable after a massage.

If your muscles have been tense for a long time, then they are often sore just from having been mobilized and stretched. This is similar to the feeling you get after you haven't exercised for a long time and then get a little too much exercise. A hot epsom salts bath can often help get rid of some of this pain. Many people find that drinking several glasses of water after the massage also helps.

If a muscle has trigger points in it, the muscle can often be sore after treatment. In this case, putting moist heat on it and gently stretching it often helps.

Sometimes a muscle is sore after treatment because the treatment was a little too challenging for your body. There are often clues that were present during the massage, such as the pressure felt a little too strong, or you had difficulty relaxing when that muscle was being treated.

Massage therapists tend to check in with their clients frequently to make sure that they aren't appling too much force. If your massage therapist didn't check in adequately, then you need to tell him or her next time so that your needs can be met.

If your therapist did check in, but you were too shy to let them know what you were feeling then, you need to be more assertive next time.

Massage therapy can be a little uncomfortable at times, but should be generally relaxing and nurturing. If these elements aren't there, then you need to speak up.

For many of us, learning to speak up for ourselves is very important.

If we don't speak up for ourselves in an enviornment that is tailored for our comfort and support, then it is likely that we don't speak up for ourselves in other situations. And that can be a big source of stress!
