What Should I Do if I'm Sore After a
Massage?
Many
people are a surprised to find themselves sore after a massage!
Soreness can arise from a variety of reasons, and a little soreness
is often inevitable after a massage.
If your muscles have been tense for a long time, then
they are often sore just from having been mobilized and stretched.
This is similar to the feeling you get after you haven't exercised
for a long time and then get a little too much exercise. A hot epsom salts bath can
often help get rid of some of this pain. Many people find that
drinking several glasses of water after the massage also
helps.
If a muscle has trigger points in it, the muscle can
often be sore after treatment. In this case, putting moist heat on
it and gently stretching it often helps.
Sometimes a muscle is sore after treatment because the
treatment was a little too challenging for your body. There are
often clues that were present during the massage, such as the
pressure felt a little too strong, or you had difficulty relaxing
when that muscle was being treated.
Massage therapists tend to check in with their clients
frequently to make sure that they aren't appling too much force. If
your massage therapist didn't check in adequately, then you need to
tell him or her next time so that your needs can be
met.
If your therapist did check in, but you were too shy to
let them know what you were feeling then, you need to be more
assertive next time.
Massage therapy can be a little uncomfortable at times,
but should be generally relaxing and nurturing. If these elements
aren't there, then you need to speak up.
For many of us, learning to speak up for ourselves is
very important.
If we don't speak up for ourselves in an enviornment that
is tailored for our comfort and support, then it is likely that we
don't speak up for ourselves in other situations. And that can be a
big source of stress!
