Peripheral Nerve Approach to the Foot & Ankle


Course Description


 


Learn how to palpate and (sensitively) provoke the neves of the foot and ankle and then treat them safely and effectively with Nerve Obsessed Doug Alexander. 

In this 2 hour course Doug shares his knowledge and skills for evaluating and treating compressed, grouchy and sleepy nerves in the foot and ankle region.

There is also video of the recorded webinar with Ryan Hoyme, the Massage Nerd interviewing Doug as he fields live questions from a virtual audience.   


COURSE CURRICULUM

This course presents evaluation and treatment techniques to identify nerve compression and irritation locally in the foot and ankle as well as when to refer out.

 

  • Evaluation of peripheral nerves of the ankle and foot by neural tension testing and palpation
  • Clinical decision making, treatment dosage and progression as well as referral to other health care providers
  • Releasing the following neural interfaces: 
  • Flexor retinaculum, extensor retinaculum, abductor hallucis, anterior talofibular ligament
  • Mobilizing the tibial, plantar, calcaneual, sural, and peroneal nerves through slide and glide
  • Client homecare suggestions

INSTRUCTOR



Doug Alexander holds a biology degree from Carleton University (1982) and is a graduate of Sutherland-Chan School and Teaching Clinic (1985). He currently teaches in the Algonquin College Massage Therapy program. Doug supports the education and performance of massage therapists through direct person-to-person education as well as various types of online and technologically supported methods.

Doug edited the OMTA’s Journal of Soft Tissue Manipulation over its decade-long life span, and is the author of two DVD’s on Nerve Mobilization. He is a former faculty member of the American Back Society, Physical Medicine Research Foundation and Seminar Network International. Doug has served as a trustee for the Massage Foundation in the United States and published over 20 papers in the massage therapy literature. He has particular expertise in neurological and orofacial problems as well as therapist and client self care strategies.
