This course includes the video recording of Christopher Moyer’s “The Importance of Modern Psychology to Manual Therapy" at the 2016 Manual Therapy Conference in British Columbia plus reading of Dr. Moyer’s paper: Affective Massage Therapy.

DR. MOYER’S PRESENTATION: THE IMPORTANCE OF MODERN PSYCHOLOGY TO MANUAL THERAPY

Modern psychology is essential for optimizing education and practice in manual therapy, but it is often not given the attention it deserves. massage therapy needs to be informed by modern psychology. This presentation will define modern psychology and outline six specific ways in which it can inform manual therapy:

Increase our understanding of treatment processes and outcomes / Strengthen critical thinking skills & combat the pernicious influence of pseudoscience / Promote interprofessionalism / Connect with the most relevant research / Optimize self-care and career longevity / Develop Affective Massage Therapy as an advanced specialty.

 

CURRICULUM

  • Describe how modern scientific psychology differs from early philosophical psychology
  • Identify treatment context as a significant factor
  • Identify opportunities for inter-professionalism
  • Strengthen critical thinking skills
  • Multidimensional Management: Working in the Tissue, Neurological and Psychological dimensions

COURSE MATERIALS

  • Video recording of Dr. Moyer’s 0.75 hour presentation at the 2016 RMTBC Manual Therapy Conference: An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Science and Practice. Dr. Moyer’s power point is also available within the course for downloading and studying.
  • Reading of Dr. Moyer’s journal article: Affective Massage Therapy available at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3091449
  • It takes 1 hour to watch the video and perform a preliminary reading of Dr. Moyer’s paper.

Christopher Moyer, PhD

INSTRUCTOR

Christopher Moyer, PhD

Christopher Moyer, PhD is a psychological scientist who uses a variety of methods (e.g., meta-analysis, clinical trials, psychophysiological and neuroscientific laboratory assessments, survey construction and administration, et al.), combined with and informed by clinical training and experience, to study when, for whom, and by what mechanisms massage therapy, the manual manipulation of soft tissue intended to promote health, wellness, and performance, can be beneficial.

Chris is presently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Denver and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Moyer is also the co-author of Massage Therapy: Integrating Research and Practice with Trish Dryden. a textbook integrating current research into massage therapy applications for various client populations. He also authored the 2008 paper: Affective Massage Therapy in the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.
